Mrs. Lines' SOAP Challenge!

Message from Mrs. Lines

I had an idea I thought could be fun. You do not have to do this but you may enjoy the creativity and you may surprise yourselves by what you produce:

We all know how important hand washing is in stopping this virus from spreading.

As simple soap and bubbles are our front fighters, I am inviting all grades to participate in a Supersoap/SuperBubble activity.

Choose your hero, Mr. or Mrs. Soap or Bubbble, SoapMan/SoapWoman/SoapKid, Bubbleman/Woman/Kid, WonderBubble/The Bubble Gang.. you can find your own hero or heroes and use any of these ideas or make your own title. Just make sure it includes soap or bubble.

Once you have your hero or heroes, you could:
  • draw a picture (black and white, coloured, painted, collage,..any medium you choose)
  • write a story, illustrated is best
  • make a comic strip
  • make up a song about our soap and bubble heroes - to your own tune or any tune you know
  • make a great dance
All of these can be as simple or complicated as you are able to complete at your grade.

Don't feel stressed that this is extra work - this is for fun if you are wondering what to do, not an extra assignment.

You can use your computers for any of these or scan your hand-drawn work.

We will display all we receive when we return to school. Remember no hard copies to school. We will print them and you can keep your originals as memories of this very different time!

Remember why soap is such a great ally - it breaks down the fatty layer that protects the villain virus.

You are smarter than the villain because you have discovered the secret of breaking through his defence.

What is a bubble? A layer of air surrounded by soap.

Easy to make - just soap, water, and rubbing together with your hands.

Then you have a superpower bubble that can get into every tiny little corner as you wash carefully.

Maybe you'll even hear the villains squeaking as they are defeated!

For now, you are HIS SOAP (Students Organizing Against Pandemic) Stars! Maybe you can invent more slogans/acronyms using the word SOAP or BUBBLE(S). Get inventive, everyone, and have fun!

With love to you all,
Mrs. Lines

Reading Difficult Texts

Mr. Adcock sent this to me.

It will definitely help you in all of your future reading, but it might also come in handy while you research your topic for your Historical Fiction and your report about Chernobyl.

I hope that you find this video useful.

Thanks for sharing, Fee Bee Zee!

Maths Topic 14-1 Lesson

This is the coolest song ever. Be prepared to forget every other song you have ever liked. This one will be sticking around until long after the CoroNazis have been defeated.

Every year I give each student the picture below to stick in their workbook. The CoroNazis just helped us save at least one tree this year.

Don't forget to send photographs of yourself learning from a distance.

You can email them straight to me and I will put them in a folder. Have as much fun as you want to. Mrs. Wolef will choose some to go into the yearbook so if you have siblings, make sure you have them in the photographs too!

Don't forget to check out or quote of the week while you are distance learning.

Day 6

Hello!

It is Monday and I have crossed out Week 26 on our Fractions of Grade 5 chart.
  1. 9-10:15: Maths Topic 14-1 - Customary Units of Measurement for CAPACITY - be careful. There is a reason why so very few countries still use this system. Use all of the resources in today's lesson to make sure that you understand.
  2. 10:30-3PM: I will be working through your Historical Fiction stories and your Chernobyl reports for Science. Note that I will be working through them, I will not be grading them yet. The more we check with each other, the better your stories and reports will be.
For Maths, I have been wanting to share this with you for a while. Remember, I spoke about it when I was trying to get someone in the class to nominate Liberia for our International Expo. Here is the Venn diagram that I mentioned.

For the next three days, please work on these once you have completed your Maths. Remember to get outside time (AWAY from crowded areas), wash your hands regularly, and take care of your health. Take breaks, take walks, take ice cream from the fridge when nobody is looking, but we sure to take time to work on the following:
  • Work on your Social Studies project;
  • Work on your Historical Fiction draft - remember the first draft of ideas (not the whole essay) is due today;
  • Work on your Science report about Chernobyl;
  • Work on your International Expo as much as you can - 'Hangout' with your group;
  • Work on your ideas and gather materials for your self-watering STEM  - check in with your partner;
  • READ - do research, read a book that you got from the library or have been meaning to read;
Historical Fiction Due Dates:
Friday, March 27: First draft due (I wll be working through these this morning, Monday, March 30th)
Tuesday, April 7th: Second draft due (You will have a week to work on this draft).
Tuesday, April 21st: Final printed copy due.

Day Five: Friday, March 27th

Hello!

It is Friday and I will be crossing out Week 26 on our Fractions of Grade 5 chart today.

  1. 9-10:15: Maths Topic 13 Test - The test will appear on the blog at 9AM. Please type the answers into the document that I just shared with you. Be sure that you type into the right block with the right question number.
  2. 10:30-11:45 Number The Stars Assessment: I will share the test document with each of you before 10:30AM - Answer the questions as well as you can before 11:45 when I will lock the documents, making them View Only.

Afternoon Session: There is no specific lesson for this afternoon but here are a few things that you could do if you choose not to take Snoopy's advice:
  • Work on your Social Studies project;
  • Work on your Historical Fiction draft - remember the first draft of ideas (not the whole essay) is due today;
  • Work on your Science report about Chernobyl;
  • Work on your International Expo as much as you can - 'Hangout' with your group;
  • Work on your ideas and gather materials for your self-watering STEM  - check in with your partner;
  • READ - do research, read a book that you got from the library or have been meaning to read;
  • Give yourself a Shazam for being such a spectacular bunch because you have all adapted really well to the distance learning thing. With this in mind, please check the workbook document to which you have been uploading photographs of your work. Make sure that you have completed and uploaded every lesson. I will put the last of your grades in tonight, once I have graded the Maths tests.
  • Rest this weekend and BE CAREFUL, VIGILANT, AND RESPONSIBLE. Those CoroNazis have heard all about the Robustanian Resisitance movement and they're going to be coming for us. Keep your clean hands, fresh soap, and running water with you at all times. You're going to need them.
Historical Fiction Due Dates:
 Friday, March 27 (TODAY): First draft due
Tuesday, April 7th: Second draft due
Tuesday, April 21st: Final printed copy due.

Let's see how the war against CoroNazis goes on the Xiangshanobyl front. I hope to be seeing all of you soon so that we can finish off all of these tasks and move onto biographies (Heroes WEEK!) and plays involving The Cold War.

SCIENCE REPORT - CHERNOBYL

The above photograph is of what we call a Ferris wheel. It's just like any Ferris wheel that you will find in an amusement park except for one thing. Look closer. Look at the ground around the Ferris wheel and the trees in the background. What do you see?

Now, don't worry so much about what you see. Think more about what you don't see. Where are all the people? Why are there no other rides in sight? Why are there no happy children and no cotton candy stalls?

Here's why: Something terrible happened near a town called Pripyat, Ukraine which is located near a nuclear reactor site called Chernobyl. An accident happened 34 years ago, on the 26th of April, 1986. You must investigate to find out what the accident was all about but before doing so, you need to watch this video:

The more you read, the faster you become at reading instructions quickly. However, just in case you missed those instructions, here they are, standing still so that you can make sense of them:

After that, and before you move on to watching the videos below, read this article on Achieve 3000.

Tell Kanon! Tell Kanon! Tell Kanon!

Social Studies Chapter 11 Questions

Hello,

If you have any questions about the test, please post them as comments below.

Have fun with this one. Make sure that you are aware and available for the Kahoot next week. You will need to know some of the answers from this test to be able to do well during next Wednesday's game.

Maths Topic 13-7 Answers

Here is a better explanation of DSR Question 1 (I was a little confused this morning so please note that it is the correct answer for the 13-7 DSR, not 13-6):

Maths Topic 13-7 - Problem Solving/Test Review

This is a moment in time that I wish that we could all be in the same room. Each year that I have taught this, I have built a cube like this and used chalk to colour the outer faces. This makes it much easier to determine how many of the faces are painted. However, you guys might have something at home that could be used or you might just enjoy the challenge of using your imagination to solve the problem.

Day 4: Thursday, March 26

  1. 9-10:15: Maths Topic 13-7 Problem Solving/Test Review
  2. 10:30-11:45 Social Studies 'Surprise' Chapter 11 Test
  3. Science - Ecosystems Video Research/Report Outline
  4. Historical Fiction - Work on your first draft. Be sure to use the Historical Fiction document that I shared with you. The sooner you start working on it, the sooner I can start helping you to edit and evaluate your story.
