Is Greta Thunberg for real?

As you will know from our bonus questions today, there are people who consider Greta Thunberg a hero but there are also those who don't think that what she is doing is all that impressive. People who feel this way do so for different reasons. Some don't like what she is doing because she is being honest about how people who have the power to change the effect we are having on the environment are not doing enough to not destroy our chances of surviving on the planet.

There are others, though, who are suggesting that maybe Greta is being used by those who want the world to be aware of climate change. Some are saying that she is too young and has no right to challenge governments and businesses.

I can understand why some of these people say what they do, especially those who know how much pressure Greta must be under to keep fighting for the cause that she started at such a young age.

One thing I will say is that Greta does her homework. She understands facts and has evidence shown by research and scientific investigation to support her arguments.

What do you think about all of this, especially the cartoon at the top of this post and the video below?

  1. I think she is for real because she was actually crying in the video. She also has a whole bunch of people who are supporting her and he really looks like she cares.

  2. Good response. Now, how can you demonstrate your support for her with evidence so that people who oppose her can't simply say that your support is based on an opinion that you hold?

  3. If she has asperges syndrome I don’t think she can act like that.

  4. That is one way to explain it, as people diagnosed with this tend to treat everything literally and struggle to pretend.

However, how do we establish credibility for Greta's argument? How do we accept that what she is saying about climate change is true?

We could start by considering the fact that 97 per cent of scientists surveyed across the planet who have knowledge about climate (keeping in mind that a lot of ordinary people don't think too deeply about the difference between climate and weather) have agreed that the average temperature of our planet has increased by 1.2 per cent since before industrialization and that they agree that humans are the cause of this.

  5. Carbon dioxide creates the greenhouse effect. It lets heat in but not out. 97%of scientists say that the earth is heating up. The “This is a snowball” people are silly.
