That's possibly to do with the way that Kate DiCamillo lets her characters describe themselves.One of my favourite Willy May quotes if not my favourite is "I ain't got to do nothing except stay black and die." As I mentioned, it sounds very much like something a friend of mine would say and mean in just the same way.
